Since "Back to the Moon" aired, everyone knew that Rose Quartz supposedly shattered Pink Diamond. However, "The Trial" changed everything, when Blue Zircon revealed that a supreme force more powerful than Rose must have committed the crime. However, who was the culprit and why was this covered up?

Who Shattered Pink Diamond?

Rose is Out of the Picture

As Blue Zircon stated, there is no way that Rose could have easily gotten past the guards and shattered the Diamond.

There were no Rose Quartz soldiers in her entourage and none in her guard. So how did a Rose Quartz, with no business being anywhere near Pink Diamond, get so close in the first place? Where were Pink Diamond's attendants? Her Agates, Her Sapphires? And where was her Pearl?

—Blue Diamond's Zircon, "The Trial"
Rose Quartz's lack of authority in the presence of Pink Diamond rules her out as a subject.

White Diamond

It is worth noting that White Diamond is the only Diamond who is not at the trial in the namesake episode (other than Pink, who, obviously, can't be present for the trial of her own murder). This lack of presence may be the Crewniverse messing with those who wished to see White Diamond in the episode or it may be some kind of hint towards the character's crimes. As in most courtroom scenarios, a person is thought to be guilty if they do not appear in court. White Diamond even fits the criteria of the possible suspect.

No, whoever did this was already close to Pink Diamond. Someone her guards would allow to get near her, someone she would listen to when asked to stop her palanquin and step outside, and someone with the authority to cover it up afterwards! Someone with supreme authority... Someone... like one of you!

—Blue Diamond's Zircon, "The Trial"

Yellow Diamond's Defensive Actions

Yellow Diamond's actions after being accused by Blue Zircon are very swift and anger-filled. She ends up poofing the Zircon, along with her own. This is most likely to eliminate those who witnessed the truth. She even states that Rose Quartz (Steven) should be eliminated as well, most likely due to "her" appearance during the revealing of the truth.

Let's shatter Rose Quartz and be done with it!

—Yellow Diamond, "The Trial"
Even if Yellow is not the main culprit, it could be defending the true victim of the crime. For example, if White Diamond committed the crime, Yellow Diamond may be trying to defend her. Yellow and White may possibly have a relationship similar to that of Blue and Pink.

Why Was It Covered Up?

To Shelter Blue Diamond

From the episode, "The Trial", Blue Diamond seems to believe the story of Rose being the one who shattered Pink. She points out details that are possibly part of the fake story, such as Rose using her sword to commit the crime, and even gasps when she finds out that the other Diamonds are possible culprits. But, why would Blue only know about the cover-up?

It could be possible that she was never told. It is clear that Blue Diamond had some affection towards Pink Diamond and she shows some heavy grief when the shattering is mentioned. However, her heavy emotions can cause major effects, such as her ability to spread her feelings around the courtroom in "The Trial". If she knew that one of the Diamonds was the one who shattered Pink, her rage would most likely be off the charts. To prevent this, Rose Quartz was placed in the story instead. When Blue Diamond discovers the truth, Yellow Diamond attempts to cover the story up again.

We don't need to listen to this nonsense!

—Yellow Diamond, "The Trial"

To Get Blue Diamond To Snap

Blue Diamond is not only sad about Pink's death, she's angry. Her rage is mainly targeted towards Rose Quartz, the "culprit". She even plans to do something worse than what "Rose" thinks they'll do to her.

No. I want to hear her make her case. I want to know what she thinks we're going to do with her. Because I want to do something worse.

—Blue Diamond, "The Trial"
This rage needs to be controlled and the Diamonds most likely want to aim it towards Rose Quartz, who is already a main criminal due to her rebellion. Blue is also pressured towards shattering all of the Rose Quartzes in rage (which she refuses to do due to their prior ownership).

It's been thousands of years, Blue, and you still can't bring yourself to destroy these Gems? She was shattered by a Rose Quartz! The entire cut of Gem deserves the same fate!

—Yellow Diamond, "That Will Be All"

To Protect The Diamond Authority's Image

The Diamonds may shatter or poof gems for their own (mainly legal) purposes as leaders, but shattering one of their own members would be crossing the line. Gems couldn't trust them anymore. They may be seen as tyrants.

The Rose Quartz story was most likely spread around and placed in the files to protect their image. They want to be respected and trusted by their subjects.
