Sticksy here. And today we're going to discuss...
No! No way! We just freed a bunch of mindless gem chunks, okay?! They're going to crawl who knows where, all over the temple.

Of course, Gem Shards are shattered or, by Gem Standards, "dead" Gems. Pearl tells us that, "These shards have a powerful partial consciousness that has been harnessed by Gems throughout history in order to create semi-sentient drone soldiers with the capacity to follow basic orders. Gems once created an army of these drones, but found their obedience waned as the shards overdeveloped inside their uniforms and turned on their commanders. You see, any shard inside any sort of container could become a monster!". It can be assumed these things can utilize possession, much like the Lighthouse Gem Monster. This is supported by Pearl's statement, "Have the shirts come to life and possessed the bodies of their wearers?!".
Didn’t you hear what I said about the living armor and infantries and many many deaths?!
"Army" obviously implies war. So we can conclude Gem Shards were heavily used in the rebellion as 'weapons'. Their only purpose was to destroy. I'm guessing they originally came from fallen Gem soldiers?
The armor of the fallen!
Like Light Creatures, they need a master/reason to "follow basic orders." Rose's armory houses loads of armor. Ergo, the armor of the fallen. "The fallen"? Did the Crystal Gems use their fallen comrades as drones?
Gem Shards are basically parasites. They can overdevelop in their host. Become a person. And cause mass destruction in defiance.
I REST MY CASE.
